A Business Guide to Google AI Overviews and AI Mode

Short answer

There is no special trick for AI Overviews or AI Mode. To be eligible as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and able to show with a snippet, and the site must be included in Search Console’s Search generative AI control. Beyond that, the same people-first content and technical SEO apply.

Two features, one foundation

AI Overviews and AI Mode are not the same.

✦

AI Overviews

A summary on the regular results page that gives the gist of a topic, with links to learn more.

  • Only shown when Google’s systems judge it additive to classic Search
  • Often does not trigger at all
◎

AI Mode

A conversational experience for nuanced questions, comparisons and follow-ups, with a comprehensive response and links to supporting websites.

  • Designed for questions that once took several searches
  • May use different models and techniques
Both may use a “query fan-out” technique, issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources to develop a response. Because the models differ, the responses and links each shows will vary. Google Search Central
Query fan-out

One question becomes many searches.

This is why one strong page on a narrow subtopic can be surfaced for a broad question, and why covering real subtopics well matters more than repeating a keyword.

Eligibility

What Google requires, and what it does not.

Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special optimizations are necessary. Several popular “AEO/GEO hacks” sit in the second bin.

What actually helps

Google’s own list is refreshingly ordinary.

“Creating content that people find unique, compelling, and useful will likely influence your website's presence in generative AI search in the long run more than any of the other suggestions in this guide.” Google Search Central
01

Non-commodity content

Unique, first-hand and expert perspectives that go beyond what others have said or a model could easily produce.

02

Organized for readers

Well-written, easy-to-follow pages for a human audience. There is no ideal page length.

03

Images and video

Generative AI features can bring in relevant images and video. Image and video SEO best practices already apply.

04

Business Profile and Merchant Center

Local business and product information can appear in AI responses and other Search results.

05

Page experience and crawling

Follow crawling best practices, provide a good page experience and reduce duplicate content.

Inclusion control

You can now opt out of AI features without leaving Search.

Search Console’s Search generative AI control rolled out to all websites worldwide on August 31, 2026. Try the switch to see what changes.

Search Console›Settings›Search generative AI
Include this property in Search generative AI featuresAI Overviews · AI Mode · Generative AI in Discover
Included (default)

Pages remain eligible to appear in and help ground AI Overviews, AI Mode and AI features in Discover, if they are indexed and snippet-eligible.

Excluded

Content is generally removed from these features within 1–2 days after the change goes live; caching can take longer. The site gets no traffic or impressions from them.

  • Not a ranking signal for other parts of Search
  • Does not affect AI training. Google points to Google-Extended for that
  • Child properties can inherit or override a parent setting

Impressions report

Finally, a separate view of AI impressions.

Search Console’s generative AI performance report rolled out to all websites worldwide on August 31, 2026.

  • Impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode over time
  • Pages with the highest and lowest impressions in AI features
  • Where impressions originate, by device or country
Read it carefully
  • An impression counts when a link to your site is shown in an AI feature, not when it is read or clicked.
  • Search Labs experiments are not included, and the usual Performance report limits apply, such as the 1,000-row limit.
  • AI feature traffic is also counted inside the overall “Web” totals of the Performance report.
  • Discover has its own generative AI report.

The May 7 FAQ change

FAQ rich results are gone. FAQs for people are not.

May 7, 2026FAQ rich results stop appearing

The expandable FAQ result is no longer shown in Google Search.

May 8, 2026Deprecation notice added

Google adds a notice to the FAQ rich result documentation.

June 15, 2026Documentation removed

The FAQ rich result documentation is removed from Search Central.

What it means

Visible FAQ sections can still help readers find answers quickly. FAQ markup no longer produces a special result in Google Search, and it is not required for AI features. Do not expect FAQ schema to create AI Overview visibility.

1

What Is Answer Engine Optimization?

2Short answer

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the process of structuring and strengthening online information so search and AI systems can retrieve, understand, verify, and cite it in direct responses. It overlaps heavily with SEO: it combines technical SEO, clear content architecture, entity signals, evidence and measurement.

5“…optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO.” Google Search Central
  1. The heading is the question

A descriptive heading tells readers exactly what the section answers.

  2. Visible, plain HTML text

No hidden tabs, no nosnippet, so the passage stays snippet-eligible.

  3. The answer comes first

A complete definition in the opening sentence, readable on its own.

  4. Honest scope

It says AEO overlaps SEO instead of presenting it as a separate trick.

  5. Linked primary source

The claim is supported by Google’s own documentation.

This shows structure, not results. We do not claim this passage appears in any AI Overview.

FAQs

AI Overviews and AI Mode questions

Answers based on Google’s current documentation.

No. AI Overviews are only shown when Google’s systems decide they add to classic Search, and they often do not trigger. Google also says indexing and serving are not guaranteed.

No. Google says structured data is not required for generative AI search and there is no special schema to add. It is still useful for rich-result eligibility as part of normal SEO.

FAQ rich results no longer appear in Google Search. FAQ sections can still help readers, but FAQ markup no longer produces that result, and it is not required for AI features.

Google does not require a special format. Write for people, organize the page so it is easy to follow, and add unique, first-hand information supported by relevant images or video.

Yes. The Search generative AI control in Search Console excludes a site from AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative AI in Discover. Google says it is not used as a ranking signal elsewhere in Search.

Yes. Google says its AI features are rooted in core Search ranking and quality systems, so SEO best practices remain relevant.
